The engine, based on the 2.9 EFI Ford V6, was created by Cosworth Engineering in 1991. The engine was originally developed for use in touring cars and utilised by many people in the motor sport industry.
Ford then went on to use the engine in the Granada Scorpio due to its high reliability and raw power. Ford had a figure of 200bhp in mind to power the Scorpio using an automatic gearbox.
This worked well and provided much more power than originally thought. However there was a slight problem; a lack of traction due to the size and weight of this executive cruiser.
Rather than ruin the car with traction control, Ford decided to decrease the power output to around 220bhp... But even detuned, this powerhouse still amazed.
Top Boss quickly saw the potential in this engine and started to convert the Ford Sierra with this new V6 engine in place.
Delivering even more power and torque, due to the lighter body and more efficent rear and four wheel drive systems, the engine propelled the Sierra at a phenomenal rate, but was 220bhp enough in a lighter shell...??
Top Boss Performance went on to develop a forced induction engine using twin turbos with variable boost. The result was a massive 311bhp. 341 lb/ft at only 7psi. When the pressure was increased to 14psi we had over 460bhp and massive torque. At the 2006 Winter Ball, we had a tuned engine on a rolling road and saw it run up to a huge 520BHP
Are we happy with this? Of course not.
With further development we think we can squeeze a staggering 800bhp out of this amazing engine.
